Also, I did receive an ARC for this book but I didn’t receive the first edition of it, the one that caused people to be angry.

I’m not going to mention exactly what the issue was about because that’s spoilers but I genuinely didn’t seem anything racially wrong with the book. In regards to the controversy, this book went through at the beginning of the year, I honestly could care less. In her case, she did the opposite, what could’ve been a great story ended up being a mess, in my opinion.

I can appreciate it a bad story if it was written correctly–I’m not going to give it a 5-star rating but at least it was well written. Also, at times the book dragged for too long and it felt incoherent. It was confusing at times to follow the storyline because of how they spoke. It’s a bit hard to explain but she pretty much took an old world where nothing about it changed but made the characters speak like we do today and it did not match the storyline at all. She took a pre-imperialist world where people still walked on horses and used words like Kohl to describe makeup and made them talk as if they were with us today. The book time period did not match with her writing style at all. However, that doesn’t help the fact that the book was poorly written. To give her credit though, in her opening letter she does address that she learned English as her second language so that may be the reason. Anyways, the main reason I didn’t like this book was because of the author’s writing style. Now, this review is going to be short because I don’t remember much about it, I read it a while ago and the notes I took of it got lost somewhere. Now, she’s on the run and with Ramson, a criminal, it is up to her to figure out who’s trying to kill her and her family. The princess lives inside her palace walls until someone murders her dad and then tries to kill her. Affinates in this world are feared and oppressed, most of them used and trafficked as slaves. In this book, we follow the story of Ana, the princess, who’s also an Affinate. I have to admit I did read the book because of all the controversy going on with it, but to be honest, that was not the issue I had with this book.
